Letter to Thomas Frank
Dear Thomas Frank,
My name is Ashley Magana and I am a freshmen at California State University, Northridge. First and for most I wanted to say that you have a very strong argument with stating that corporations are using the countercultural idea as a way to make us buy their product. I think that is very true and corporations in America are using the idea of wanting to be different for marketing purposes. However, what I do not understand is the reason to bring up such a topic without providing an opinion? Is Corporate America creating a problem? And if so how is it that we can stop it or minimize it?
Corporate America is basically using the idea the Beats in 1960, as you stated in your article “Commodify Your Dissent”. Being different is a symbol that is in ever commercial, advertising, television, and in every mind. One example that I thought of first when I was reading your article was the Hot Cheetos Cat. In every commercial he is the cool guy going against the rules, wearing his sunglasses. This makes people wonder that they should be as equally as cool as that cat and so they buy the chips. Other examples include Apple, Soda Brands, Vans, Music, Urban Outfitters, Forever, and the list goes on. The more obsessed we get with fulfilling these desires that are being brought to our attention the more we want them.
I think that as much as this topic is being brought up, people just do not want to realize that their expenses are causing bankruptcies or many problems. Theses expenses are not even for the best, they are going towards fashion and creating a “unique” look which honestly is not that important to be going towards. I believe that if we state the obvious to society not much will be done, but if we tell them how it will affect society and how they could fix it maybe it will cause a much greater change in the way people spend their money. Some have no idea that the decisions they make not only affect themselves but everyone in this society. What will happen after we spend more than what we could spend and want more? What will we do in this case?
I am writing to you because I want to know more about this topic and I want to get a better understanding of your opinion towards this, whether to you it is a problem or not. I understand that you want us to perceive it as we want but it could of brought a better understand to the decisions some make by giving you r opinion. People must be aware of the things they are being encouraged to buy, especially with the idea if this is a good thing for them or not. I hope you consider reading my letter to you and you are able to respond because I am most interested in getting a further analysis on this topic because it is most interesting to me.
Sincerely,
Ashley Magana
